Hi! My name is Devin Ho and I'm currently a sophomore studying Computer Science at the University of Illinois. I'm a second generation Vietnamese America all the way from sunny Cupretino, California. My parents were refugees from the Vietnam War and left the country on small boats when they were around the age of 12. They ended up being very successful here in the states and raised me without much hardship at all, so I took this class hoping to get a better look at what they had to go through, and what other minority had to go through as well.
Coming from an engineering field where everything is binary, it definitely felt like a huge challenge coming to class every day. I had to think critically about pressing issues that I would have never even thought about before. And what was hardest for me was understanding that there is never one solution, or even a solution at all. I couldn't look up the answer online or in the back of a text book, rather I had to think critically and take into account many different factors that affected the situation at hand. In the end, I was able to fully explore the full story of many minority groups in the United States, as well as going in depth on issues regarding Asian Americans as well as refugees from the Vietnam War. It was definitely a challenge but I'm glad I stuck through it to the end.
